The Associated Press contributed to this report.
A Trump rally scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. was postponed for another day.
Protesters gathered outside the building on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus and one was seen on video inside the arena storming the stage.
CBS News reported that some skirmishes and fights occurred in the UIC Pavilion.
Video footage showed physical altercations.
The Trump campaign released a statement regarding the postponement Friday:
"Mr. Trump just arrived in Chicago and after meeting with law enforcement has determined that for the safety of all of the tens of thousands of people that have gathered in and around the arena, tonight’s rally will be postponed to another date. Thank you very much for your attendance and please go in peace. "
The Huffington Post reported that the rally was postponed at 7:30 p.m., an hour and a half after its scheduled start time.
Before the rally, UIC faculty and staff were calling for university administration to cancel the rally, saying it would create a "hostile and physically dangerous environment."
